Split, part 2

There was too much to see in Split for just one day, especially since we arrived late the previous day. Since we could stay in our little garden apartment, it seemed the best plan.
After visiting a small art supply store to find another journal for Jim, we went down to the old city, which is tourist central.
We found a sunny cafe in which to start our morning and ordered our typical- coffee with milk, as it is known here. At home I only have a coffee drink occasionally, but it has become our European routine, as a nice break during the day or first thing in the morning. I know this is no revelation to you coffee drinkers, but it is sort of a surprise to me that I can enjoy drinking this much coffee!
Inside the walls we went, into the thick of things, so to speak. This was all part of the Diocletians palace, and shows many different styles and periods of architecture. We didn't do the museums, preferring to wander through the streets at leisure.

There were lots of German and some French tour groups traipsing through.
Sometimes we'd even pick up a snippet or two of history as we passed by them.
More lovely arches
This woman made most , or all of these by hand. I should have bought something, just to support her beautiful work.
Since Jim had been wearing his Hawaiian type shirt and sticking out in the more conservative crowds, I convinced him to let me buy him a nice plaid shirt, and then I couldn't help but call him " Croatian Jim" cause now he looked a little more like a local. People even started asking him for directions!

We wandered outside the walled city and right into the market, which was lively and bustling.

We bought another slice of that spinach filled pancake from this enormous round.
Sour cherries were plentiful. We took this photo for our friends and table mates on our cruise, Raisa and Viktor, who love sour cherries from their youth in Russia.
I call this one " study in red- fruits and veg"
Lots of attractive bottles of olive oil, and dried figs.
Sweet Wiliam galore
I hope she sold these..
Flea market finds
And my favorite little vendor of fresh and dried herbs. I so wanted to capture her sweet face.
I even bought some herbs so she wouldn't mind so much that I took a photo.
Finally we were drawn to the smell of rotisserie chicken, so we bought one, and some bread for a picnic by the beach.
Too bad we couldn't find any shade. Where was out beach umbrella?
