Siracusa

We decided to take a little day trip to Siracusa, a beautiful,,iconic town further north from where we were staying. We were going to see the market which my niece recommended, but also the architecture and majestic buildings, plus a fair number of ruins.
I'd say the market was by far our favorite part, and must admit that we're becoming a little jaded by ruins.
This is the beautiful coastline, where we almost parked illegally before we decideded that we should ask rather than be towed! Yes, a good idea when you're driving a rental car, especially.
The day was still a bit cold and windy. Brr.
I love seeing buildings like this, in a state of decay. I see lots of layers of history here.
We wandered through little narrow streets, never getting too lost. I feel so lucky that Jim's Italian is still there, and he could ask directions and converse pretty well for our basic needs.
One of the things I love about Italy is all the little niches that appear in walls and at corners that house shrines of all kinds, from the very simple to the elaborate.
Isn't this wall yummy? It is to an artist's eye!
Down the street and around the corner we ran into the temple of Apollo!
And some flea market finds
I like to think these are butter molds, but maybe not...
The market wasn't far away
The biggest fennel lever!
These are sold everywhere. I paid $5 for 5 elsewhere, here they were $5 for a crate! I hate being ripped off as a tourist, but what can ya do? It's only $5 and I certainly didn't need a crate of them...

So we haven't even gotten to lunch yet, but that will have to wait for the next post on Siracusa. Too much to show you for one post. Hungry yet?
