Of course every small town here has a plethora of fine bakeries, and this was one of my favorites.
Nice steeple...
The day we were there, there was an exceptionally low tide, according to my sister..
This was the fort where the last remaining prisoners were housed, and where Etienne , the uncle of Marie Laure from the book was held. I will not divulge what happened for those of you who have not read the book, but I highly recommend it.
It was warm, unless you were on the windy side of the beach.I don't know what that round area on the right side of the photo is,,and I don't like it!
All day long, dump trucks full of sand were being hauled from one part of the beach to another for redistribution.
I'm glad they didn't dig up these messages...
We walked along the ramparts, or high walls that surrounded the city.
I will say that most of the city was bombed by the Allies( us) in order to rout the Germans who were occupying the city. It was a strategic location, and necessary for winning the war, but tragic.
So most of these buildings had to be rebuilt after the war.
Rue du Cordiers featured in the book, but both my sister and I had forgotten quite a few key places and we decided that we would like to reread it to refresh our memories.
The next day we started from Parame, walking along the wide walkway above the sea that leads into San Malo.
It is lined with beautiful old homes that fortunately were not destroyed during the war.

I like this view from a cut out in the wall.

Many of these are summer homes for Parisians.
After our walk, we had our taste buds set on a lunch of lobster rolls at the homard place.
Another view of the fort at higher tide.

Sadly it was not to be,mad we were greeted by this sign, which translates as
"Because of the tides,we have gone fishing"
We went to the market nearby and saw these beautiful peonies from the flower lady my sister knows.

She remarked that we looked alike...
We had a delicious crepe with ham and cheese at this very old and traditional creperie. Why, I think it's nearly as old as I am!
And after, we went to Bergamot tea room for tea and cakes.

We couldn't choose just one, so we tried the chiboust with raspberries,
And the chocolate fondant with salted caramel sauce.,
It was easy to pass up the stands selling more caramel and traditional
Kougin Amann after that.Ouf!
I guess it looks like we were doing a tour of " all the sweets that we can eat" but we told ourselves that we only live once and who would appreciate it more than the two of us sisters who only see each other maybe once a year?
In the evening we had a cocktail overlooking the sea, and watched as the beach volleyball game wrapped up. They picked up their net, and within 15 minutes the water had risen to cover the beach where they had been playing. Fifteen minutes later the water was lapping up over the cement path. The tide continued to rise dramatically, until the waves were crashing up on the breakwater. It was a sight to see, and both of us without our cameras!
Goodnight to my last night by the sea.
I recommend that you read All The Light We Cannot See,by Anthony Doerr, then come to St Malo and see it for yourself. And be sure to have a crepe and stop by Bergamot for tea and cake.
